An Effingham Strings Class Who Are We? The Effingham Youth String Music Program, Inc. is a non-profit corporation, which is dedicated to the teaching of string music to the youth of our community. The program began as an experimental string music program, funded in part by an after school grant and in part by The National Youth Orchestra Foundation. The program was operational from 2002 to 2005, first as an after school program, and then in the following years, classes were offered within the school day, during the 7th and 8th hour home room or study hall class periods, and were available to all middle school students. An additional class was offered, from 3:15PM to 4:00 PM for students participating in band, or the after school study and activity program, in cooperation with the Atchison County Community Learning Center (ACCLC). During the first school year, beginning violin instruction was offered, with viola, cello, and string bass instruction offered in later years. We formed a strolling string band, which was very popular in our local area and performed at many community events, as well as school concerts. The after school grant funds were exhausted in 2005. Our superintendent of schools, and board of education, elected to discontinue our program because of funding issues. So, another great fine arts program disappeared from our school curriculum as has happened in so many places in our country. Sports programs reign supreme here in the mid-west and funding for such programs seems to always be available. Perhaps one day our public school administration will recognize the great value that orchestral music programs offer to our students.
Our MissionOur mission is to enable students of all ages, from our community and the surrounding area, to learn to play and perform traditional music together on stringed musical instruments. Funding The Effingham Youth String Music Program, Inc. is a non profit corporation. We request that donations be made to The National Youth Orchestra Foundation, www.TNYOF.org, which has continued this work by funding many new string music programs for children throughout our country. The National Youth Orchestra Foundation welcomes donations of money, as well as old musical
instruments, to help expand our program. Our goals are to increase the
number of students participating in our training program, as well as to
eventually offer instruction on additional musical instruments, including
guitar, mandolin, viola, bass and others. Background Music: "Sugar Tree Stomp", performed by Kenny Baker. Contact InformationIf you would like to receive additional
